What makes a lash wispy

Wispy lashes are made of fibres of different lengths that cross, split and fan out instead of lining up like a comb. The result looks feathered and soft, a little like lashes after mascara has been brushed through. Many wispy styles are also tapered, with shorter fibres at the inner corner and longer ones at the outer corner.

It helps to know the term is a style, not a standard. One maker's wispy may be gentle and another's dramatic. The way to tell is to look at three things on the pack: the length range, the arrangement of fibres and the band.

How to choose wispy lashes

Which eye shapes suit wispy lashes

Wispy works across eye shapes, and the length pattern is what changes the effect. A lash that is longest at the outer corner lifts and lengthens. A lash that is long all the way along opens the eye and rounds it. The table gives a starting point.

Wispy strips or wispy clusters?

Wispy comes in strips, clusters and half lashes. Strips are the quickest: one band, one placement. Clusters let you decide where the length goes, so you can build a wispy pattern that suits your eye. Half lashes add the wispy flick only at the outer corner.

Wearing and caring for wispy lashes

Wispy fibres are fine, so they tangle more easily than uniform lashes. Handle them by the band, never the fibres. After wear, peel off the old glue, wipe the band with a swab and store the pair flat in its tray. Do not use mascara on them unless the maker says it is fine, because it clumps the fibres and is hard to remove.

Care for wispy lashes
StepHow
HandlingHold the band with tweezers, not the fibres
GlueA thin line; let it go tacky before placing
BlendingA little liner at the lash line hides the band
RemovalPeel from the outer corner; use remover if it clings
StorageFlat in the tray, away from heat and steam

Reuse is possible when the band keeps its shape; see how to clean and reuse false lashes. Makers often state reuse counts, which are the maker's claim, and a pair with tangled fibres is a reason to retire it. For glue, the lash glue buying guide lists named options.

Pairing wispy lashes with eye makeup

Wispy lashes already have texture, so the rest of your eye makeup can stay simple. A thin line of liner at the lash line hides the band and joins your lashes to the false ones. A soft neutral shadow lets the lashes be the focus, while a bold shadow or heavy winged liner can compete with the fibres. If you wear mascara, apply it to your own lashes before the false ones go on, and keep it off the false fibres unless the maker says it is fine. See mascara before or after false lashes and eyeliner tips to hide the lash band.
